Staffordshire County Council Highways crews prepared for winter freeze |
|
Highways crews in Staffordshire will be on call around the clock from Monday 17 October in readiness for the winter season ahead.
Two teams of 60 Staffordshire County Council drivers will be poised and ready to brace the cold weather at a moment's notice in order to keep the road network as safe as possible and on the move.
A team of decision makers will also be closely monitoring weather forecasts so that they can act swiftly to combat the wintery conditions. They will be checking predictions on a daily basis to make sure that the most effective and appropriate treatment is put in place.
The county council has also stockpiled 30,000 tonnes in salt supply, which equates to 20 days’ worth of continuous action. Parish councils are being encouraged to make use of the salt in their own areas to meet the specific needs of their local communities in the event of persistent snowfall.
The highways crews have also been preparing the county council’s ice busting equipment for the arduous task ahead.
They have been carrying out rigorous checks and tests on the gritters, snow ploughs, loading shovels and weather stations to make sure they are in full working order |

FA Cup Heartbreak for Kidsgrove |
|
Kidsgrove Athletic put up a brave fight in the FA Cup against Bradford Park Avenue, however it was not to be Kidsgrove Athletics day as they ended up losing 0-2. A packed Seddon Stadium which recorded the best attendance since 1998 of over 1100 people watched Kidsgrove put in a good display in a tight first half, which ended 0-0.
It was a goal in second half by Bradford Park Avenue which was the turning point in the match. Kidsgrove did have a chance to score almost instantly after conceding, however it wasn’t to be their day as the shot rebounded off the post and out to safety. As the game wore on, Kidsgrove were pusihing on more and more, whilst Bradford Park Avenue looked more comfortable. It was a 2nd goal towards the end of the match which was the killer blow and shattered the FA Cup first round dreams of Kidsgrove Athletic.
Overall it has been an amazing FA Cup run for Kidsgrove and they need to now take that form into their future league matches. Kidsgrove will be no doubt hoping to attract some of today’s crowd back for future games. |

Labour Win Newchapel by election |
|
Labour candidate Elsie Bates has been elected on to Newcastle Borough Council following the result of the Newchapel by Election which was caused by the stepping down of the Conservative candidate due to work commitments.
The Newchapel by election saw a poor turnout with only a small proportion of the electorate bothering to cast their vote. The result was most encouraging for UKIP as they picked up a strong percentage of the vote, no doubt helped by recent European issues. It was a poor showing for the Lib Dems though with them only achieving 17 votes out of the total. Once again this result shows that the Lib Dems appear to be losing out locally as a result of the parties actions in Government.
This result may be further evidence of why members are switching parties at the moment.
The full result from the Newchapel ward is as follows:
- Elsie Bates – Lab - 248 votes
- Carl Geoffrey Thomson – Con - 160 votes
- Tricia Harrison - UKIP - 118 votes
- Colin Brown – Lib Dem - 17 votes
